North Shore came out firing on all cylinders as the Viking grapplers held off Mineola, 44-37 in a Nassau County dual meet contest Friday afternoon from Mineola High School.
The Conference 4A dual meet was one that suffered from relatively small rosters, which ended up in five forfeits on the afternoon. Both teams started equal as Mineola and North Shore exchanged forfeit victories at 99 and 106 pounds respectively.
With both teams even North Shore jumped out to a definitive 11-6 lead as Vinny Giacomo earned a techincial fall win over Gerson Garay at 113 pounds. Peter McCormack proceeded to cut into the Vikings lead at 120 pounds with a 5-0 decision.
Both North Shore and Mineola traded off pinfall and forfeit victories, but the Vikings got the upper hand by taking three of the next four matchups via pinfall as Scotty Miller (152), Danny Grabher (170) and Brandon Sirlin (182) all earned second period wins to give the North Shore squad its biggest lead at 41-25.
Eiden Hincape made things interesting for Mineola at 220 pounds with a pinfall win to bring the Mustangs within four points at 41-37, however Georgia Recine put a stop to the Mustang rally with a 3-1 decision over Luigi Athan at 285 pounds.
