Year in Review: LI girls basketball (2015-16)

Baldwin’s El Gammal will play hoops for Brown

El Gammal, a 6-2 senior center who spent five seasons on the Baldwin girls basketball team, made her intention to attend Brown University official on Friday during a ceremonial signing at Sportime in Lynbrook. It marked the culmination of an immensely successful high school tenure both on the court and in the classroom.

Hilaire announces she’ll attend Seton Hall

Hilaire, who led Long Island in scoring at 29.8 points per game last season while leading the Knights to a Long Island championship, said Seton Hall recruited her before she committed to Albany but never made an offer.

St. Anthony’s reclaims CHSAA AA crown

At St. John Villa Academy (Staten Island) on Saturday, Goode and her St. Anthony’s teammates saw the sacrifice pay off. In a gritty contest in which the Friars stepped to the free-throw line 39 times, they defeated Monsignor Scanlan, 57-43, in the CHSAA Class AA championship to claim the team’s second state title in three years.

Hilaire has nothing to apologize for in Floral Park loss

The Floral Park senior point guard led Long Island in scoring this season. She helped make those around her better. She put on dribbling and shooting displays that left defenders in shambles and crowds in amazement. She guided the Knights to their most successful season in school history.

Balletta was the perfect complement to Kaela Hilaire Friday as Floral Park defeated Rye, 61-55, in the state Class A semifinals at Hudson Valley Community College. The Knights advanced to the state championship game for the first time in the history of the girls basketball program.

Commack fights till end, falls in state semis

Though Commack trailed throughout its 72-55 loss to Ossining on Friday night in the state Class AA semifinals at Hudson Valley Community College, the Cougars played as if a state title still was within reach until the very end.

St. Anthony's beats Christ the King in state 'AA' semifinals

St. Anthony's earned a trip to the CHSAA Class AA girls state final with a 59-51 semifinal win over Christ the King on Friday night in Staten Island. The Friars await Monsignor Scanlan in the championship game after the Crusaders won 59-51 over Cardinal O'Hara.

Missy Sadlor’s jumper gave Marlboro, which led 39-24 at the half, its largest lead at 49-28 with just under four minutes remaining in the third. Dwyer hit two free throws and Hoeg drained a three to pull Mattituck within 49-33.

Despite facing regular double-teams and face-guarding defenders, she entered the regular-season finale on Tuesday leading Suffolk County in scoring at 26 points per game. She transformed the Colts from a 3-15 team to a 13-6 team headed to the postseason for the first time since 2008.

Howell's on-court confidence sparks No. 10 Christ the King

Ashlie Howell has been playing at a whole new level since committing to St. Peter's and it's sparked her entire team, most recently in Friday's 69-55 victory over Long Island Lutheran.

Jones-Pack wasted no time Tuesday night showing off those post moves and the basketball genes that run in her family. She scored 17 of her season-high 30 points in the first quarter to propel St. Anthony’s to a 69-41 win over host St. Mary’s in CHSAA girls basketball.
