Primer: LI Lutheran vs. Bishop Loughlin boys hoops
The Long Island Lutheran will travel to Clinton Hill, Brooklyn tonight to meet up with the Bishop Loughlin Lions in a potential instant classic non-league boys basketball contest. MSGVarsity.com live access will have all of the action beginning at 8:00 p.m.
Taking a look at the last time these two met up, Bishop Loughlin (17-5) edged LuHi (20-2) by four points in a 63-59 victory nearly a year ago on February 16, 2012. Khadeen Carrington scored 22 points, Elisha Boone added 19 points in the win over the then-defending state Federation Class A champions on the road.
During the 2012-13 campaign the Lions have had a stellar season amassing a 17-5 overall record, and are currently ranked 12th in MSG Varsity’s Tri-State Top 25. Bishop Loughlin was ranked 8th prior to the rankings coming out on February 11, but a pair of leagues losses to Molloy and Christ the King dropped the Lions down four spots.
As for Crusaders, they have shown why they are the class of Long Island basketball. LuHi is currently 20-2 on the season and currently ranked fourth in the Tri-Stat Top 25. The Crusaders are no strangers to competition from the New York City as they took out then-ranked No. 5 Lincoln, 58-49, on February 10.
Taking an in depth look at Bishop Loughlin, the Lions are led by a trio of terrific scorers in Khadeen Carrington, Mike Williams, and Javian Delacruz. Carrington has averaged 21.5 points per game this season, while Williams scores at nearly an 18 points per game clip this season. Delacruz is no slouch, averaging 11 points per game as well for Bishop Loughlin. Anthony Vernon is tough on the boards on both sides of the ball averaging nearly five per game, and Anthony Vernon is their version of Raymond Felton averaging 6.3 assists per game.
On the flip side, the Crusaders are built a bit differently than Bishop Loughlin. While Mical-Ryan Boyd leads in points per game average (14.5), each member of this squad can score in a hurry, and they generally do. University of Connecticut-bound Kentan Facey averages 13.3 points and 9.4 rebounds per game, while Tim Quashie is the third LuHi member to average in double figures at 10.6. Chris Atkinson (9.9), Tawayne Anderson (8.4), and Tiquan Garner (7.1) each contribute mightily for the Crusaders as well.
So be sure to check out all of the action with Jimmy Cavallo and Vin Parise on the call tonight starting at 8:00 p.m. The game will be available for game replay immediately following the conclusion on MSGVarsity.com This game will premiere on MSG Varsity Optimum. Channel 14 on Tuesday, February 19 at 9:00 p.m.
