Primer: Whitman at Northport hoops doubleheader
What a treat it will be at Northport High School for an MSGVarsity.com live access doubleheader basketball matchup between Walt Whitman and Northport girls and boys teams.
The first game on the docket will be the girls, which projects to be a stellar matchup on two top teams in Suffolk League II.
Walt Whitman (7-1) is one of the best teams on Long Island as they currently hold the sixth-spot in MSG Varsity’s girls basketball rankings and a perfect 3-0 record in League II.
In Whitman’s last game, Kelly Bilodeau and Katira Jemmott each scored nine points to lead the way for the Wildcats, while Essence Casey chipped in with seven in their 38-13 win over Bay Shore. Whitman outscored the Marauders 15-6 in the first quarter, and held the Marauders to only seven points for the rest of the game to take the 25-point victory.
On the flip side of the matchup, Northport (6-1) has been equally as stellar. The Tigers thrashed Riverhead in their last game. Allie Clarke led in scoring with 25 points, 11 more than her 14.1 season average. Lizzy Atkinson and Dorrien Van Dyke each contributed 16 points in the 84-58 win.
As good as the girls game is intended to be, the boys nightcap should be equally as intriguing.
Northport has been perfect so far eight games into the 2012-13 campaign including a pair of League II wins. The Tigers (8-0) have quite the tandem of Luke Petrasek (20.0 points per game) and Matt Smith (11.3). The 6-foot-9 Petrasek scored 20 points and added 14 rebounds, while 5-foot-11 guard Smith nearly messed around and dropped a triple-double with 15 points, 10 rebounds, and 8 assists in Northport’s 63-60 comeback win over Smithtown West. However, it is not just the Petrasek & Smith Show, Thomas Kennedy, Andrew Seaman, and Austin Marchese each have been instrumental in Northport’s success.
Walt Whitman (5-2) is also perfect in League II thus far at 2-0. The Wildcats received big efforts from Bedel Saget (15 points, 9 assists), Allek Hendrickson (14 points), Kieran Elmore (13 points, 7 rebounds), and Travaun Patron (13 points) in a 72-67 OT win over Jericho. Whitman trailed Jericho 23-10 at the end of the first quarter, but cut the lead to 35-26 at half. The third quarter, however, Whitman outscored the Jayhawks 20-9 to take a 46-44 advantage. The game would head to overtime, but the Wildcats would take it 72-67.
