West Hempstead scored three unanswered as the Rams defeated Floral Park, 3-2 in a game seen featured on MSGVarsity.com’s Livecast.
West Hempstead controlled much of the game in Floral Park zone, most notably in the first half where the Rams took a commanding 2-0 lead after the first forty minutes.
The Rams jumped out to a 1-0 lead just about thirty minutes into the first stanza as Luis Escobar capitalized on a miscue by Floral Park goaltender Matt Phillips. Phillips had difficulty handling a free kick and as the ball sliped out of his hands, Escobar raced behind the bewildered keeper and fired it over the goal line for a 1-0 lead.
Less than a minute later, Ellison Pertuz gave the Rams a two-goal lead, taking a pass from Kevin Macario and firing a bullet by the near-side right post and past Phillips for a Rams 2-0 lead.
Rolando Martinez gave the Rams a three-goal lead in the second half. Taking a header from Luis Escobar, Martinez used his height to his advantage and headed the corner past Phillips to put West Hempstead up 3-0.
“We’ve been working on that play with the header for a while,” Martinez said. “We were trying to get the ball into the corner a lot. That’s how we make the goals.”
Floral Park made a game of it late in the first half on a pair of goals by Mike Correale.
Correale took a lead clearing pass off a free kick and put a shot past a challenge West Hempstead goaltender, Luis Palomo.
After Correlae’s second goal, Floral Park continued to put the pressure on in what had become a nailbiter. The Knights had a late attempt off a corner in the final minute however that was stopped by Palomo to ensure a Rams 3-2 victory.
