Alex Vargas scored Tom Murphy and John Goldberg with a single in the bottom of the ninth as Calhoun (23-3) erased a two-run deficit in the inning to capture the Long Island Class AA championship at Farmingdale State.

Game 1 - Calhoun 8, MacArthur 2

Frank Trimarco struck out six, walked one and allowed no earned runs on six hits for Calhoun (21-3) in Game 1 of the Nassau Class AA championship series at Farmingdale State. Thomas Viverito went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, Robbie Rosen went 1-for-1 with an RBI and a run and Zac Goldstein added a hit and two runs in the win. Game 2 of the best-of-three final is Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Farmingdale State.

Game 2 - Calhoun 3, MacArthur 0

Alex Vargas saved his best performance of the season for the biggest game. Vargas threw a three-hitter, walked five and struck out three to lead No. 4 Calhoun to a 3-0 win over No. 2 MacArthur last night to win the Nassau Class AA baseball championship. Calhoun swept the best-of-three series and won the title for the second time in three seasons. Calhoun (22-3), which won its 13th consecutive game, will play Connetquot in the Long Island Class AA finals/Southeast Regional finals at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Farmingdale State. MacArthur finished 20-3-1.

(4) Calhoun 2, (1) Massapequa 0

Game 1 - Calhoun 3, Massapequa 1

No. 4 Calhoun (19-3) beat No. 1 Massapequa in Game 1 of a Nassau AA semifinal series. Frank Trimarco picked up the win for the Colts. Calhoun will host Game 2 Thursday at 4:15.

Game 2 - Calhoun 5, Massapequa 4

Alex Vargas pitched a five-hitter with five strikeouts and Thomas Viverito went 4-for-4 with two RBIs for Calhoun (20-3) in a Class AA Semifinal.

(2) MacArthur 2, (3) Bellmore-JFK 0

Game 1 - MacArthur 3, Bellmore-JFK 1

Frank Ziegler pitched 5 2/3 inning, allowing three hits and one run to lead No. 2 MacArthur over No. 3 Bellmore JFK in Game 1 of the best-of-three Class AA semifinals. Adam Heidenfelder escaped a bases-loaded jam in the sixth inning and recorded the four-out save, and Anthony DeNunzio doubled in Sean Carey to give MacArthur a 2-1 lead in the fifth inning. Dylan Pearce scored the third run on a wild pitch. Jordan Boyer pitched a four-hitter with eight strikeouts for Bellmore JFK. Game 2 is Wednesday at 4:45 p.m. at Bellmore JFK.

Game 2 - MacArthur 14, Bellmore-JFK 3

Nick Kaywood went 4-for-5 with two RBIs and Anthony DeNunzio added two hits and three runs as No. 2 MacArthur (20-1-1) swept a Nassau Class AA best-of-three semifinal. MacArthur plays the winner of the Calhoun-Massapequa best-of-three semifinal in the final on Monday at SUNY Farmingdale.

Game 1 - Massapequa 3, Baldwin 1

Ryan McCormick did not allow an earned run in seven innings and struck out eight batters to lead No. 1 Massapequa (18-2) over No. 11 Baldwin in Game 1 of a Nassau AA quarterfinal series.

Game 2 - Massapequa 13, Baldwin 0

Jon Mulford pitched five shutout innings with five strikeouts, no walks and three hits allowed to lead No. 1 Massapequa (19-2) over No. 11 Baldwin in the quarterfinals of the Nassau Class AA Playoffs. James Ott went 2/3 with a double, a triple and four RBIs. Massapequa will face No. 4 Calhoun in the semifinals on Monday at Massapequa.

(2) MacArthur 2, (8) Hicksville 0

Game 1 - MacArthur 5, Hicksville 0

Joe Chiaramonte tossed a shutout, allowing four hits and one walk with 11 strikeouts to lead No. 2 MacArthur over No. 8 Hicksville in Game 1 of the best-of-three Class AA quarterfinals. Chris Pappas went from first to third on a bunt and came around to score on a throwing error to give MacArthur a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning.

Game 2 - MacArthur 4, Hicksville 2

Kevin Roach pitched a two-hitter with two walks, no earned runs and nine strikeouts to lead No. 2 MacArthur (18-1-1), which eliminated No. 8 Hicksville in Game 2 of the best of three Class AA quarterfinals. Bob Kollmer went 2-for-3 with three RBIs, including a two-run homer that gave the Generals a 2-0 lead in the second. MacArthur will host Bellmore JFK at 4:30 p.m. Monday.

(3) Bellmore-JFK 2, (7) Carey 0

Game 1 - Bellmore-JFK 4, Carey 2

Jordan Boyer picked up the win as No. 3 Bellmore-JFK knocked off No. 7 Carey in Game 1 of the best-of-three Class AA quarterfinals.

Adam Swersky threw a three-hitter with 11 strikeouts, David Leiderman went 4-for-5 with three RBIs and Michael McCormack went 3-for-4 as No. 3 Bellmore JFK (17-4) swept No. 7 Carey, two-games-to-none, in a Nassau Class A quarterfinal series.

Game 1 - Calhoun 16, East Meadow 1

Frank Trimarco pitched a complete game, allowing a run on three hits with six strikeouts to lead No. 4 Calhoun (17-3) past No. 5 East Meadow in Game 1 of a Nassau Class AA quarterfinal series. Nick Savarese was 2-for-3 with 3 RBI.

Game 2 - Calhoun 9, East Meadow 3

Kevin Hiss threw six innings with six strikeouts and three earned runs to lead No. 4 Calhoun (18-3) over No. 5 East Meadow in the quarterfinals of the Nassau Class AA Playoffs. Jon Goldberg pitched the seventh inning to secure the win. Calhoun advances to the best-of-three semifinals next week against No. 1 Massapequa.

 

FIRST ROUND

Monday, May 14 (at higher seed)

(5) East Meadow 10, (12) Mepham 3

Kyle Aberasturi went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs for No. 5 East Meadow (9-6-1) over No. 12 Mepham in the first round of the Class AA playoffs. Rich Renkl went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and a run.

(11) Baldwin 7, (6) Syosset 6

Danny Capone went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and Matt Kelleher went 2-for-3 with two RBIs to lead No. 11 Baldwin (7-12) in the first round of the Nassau Class AA playoffs. Baldwin plays No. 1 Massapequa in a best-of-three quarterfinal beginning Tuesday. No. 6 Syosset is 8-11.

(7) Carey 9, (10) Plainview-JFK 2

Harry Smith allowed two earned runs in a complete game win and went 2-for-3 with two RBIs to lead No. 7 Carey (10-10) in the first round of the Nassau Class AA quarters. Carey will play No. 3 Bellmore JFK in a best-of-three quarterfinal, beginning Tuesday at 4:45 p.m. No. 10 Plainview JFK is 8-11.

(8) Hicksville 3, (9) Farmingdale 2

Matt Pagan hit a two-run single to cap a three-run bottom of the seventh inning for No. 8 Hicksville in the first round of the Nassau Class AA playoffs. Kevin Cashman picked up the victory for the Comets.
