Smithtown West gives back for Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving, a holiday that is not the same without the food, is the perfect time to run a food drive, and that’s just what Smithtown West’s service clubs did. Smithtown West’s Leadership Club and Interact Club ran a food drive in order to give out food to local residents.

Each Social Studies teacher was asked to tell their students to donate a specific food item in order to have a large variety of foods. National Honor Society also collected a large portion of food by running a food drive at a local grocery store.

Students from Leadership and Interact club put together and sent 51 boxes to families for Thanksgiving. The boxes were decorated and then stuffed equally with foods such as pasta and cereal, as well as some Thanksgiving related foods such as cranberry sauce and gravy. In addition, each box got a turkey bought with money that was also donated.

“I’m a little jealous of the social workers who give out the boxes,” Dr. Figueiredo, teacher advisor of Interact said. “I would love to give the boxes to the families. It feels good to know that our boxes really make a difference.”
