LONG ISLAND CHAMPIONSHIP

Tuesday, June 5 (at Mitchel Field)

(S1) Sayville 4, (N2) Plainedge 2

Merissa Selts threw a five-hitter and freshman center fielder made Jessica Griffin made a diving catch with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to clinch the win for Sayville (21-4) in the Class A Long Island Championship. Sayville advances to the state semis, Saturday in Queensbury. Plainedge finishes 16-5.

(2) Plainedge 2, (1) Island Trees 0

Game 1 - Plainedge 4, Island Trees 1

Taylor Curran's three-RBI double in the top of the seventh gave No. 2 Plainedge (15-4) a 3-1 lead in Game 1 of the Class A championship. Kim Nowak allowed seven hits for the complete game victory Game 2 will be played at Mitchel Athletic Complex, Thursday at 4 p.m. No. 1 Island Trees is 17-8-2.

Game 2 - Plainedge 2, Island Trees 1

Kim Nowak got the win for No. 2 Plainedge in Game 2 of the Class A championship.

 

SEMI-FINALS

Thursday, May 17 (at Mitchel Athletic Complex)

(1) Island Trees 9, (4) Clarke 3

Nicole Pellegrino went 2/3 with four RBIs and three runs to lead No. 1 Island Trees (18-2) over No. 4 Clarke in the semifinals of the Nassau Class A Playoffs. Alannah Basile threw a complete game three-hitter with seven strikeouts, one walk, and one earned run. Ashley Melendez ended the game with a 3-6 double play to Pellegrino. Island Trees will No. 2 Plainedge in the finals on Monday at Mitchel Field at 4 p.m.

(2) Plainedge 2, (3) Floral Park 0

Kim Nowak threw a five-out shutout with nine strikeouts and had a two-RBI single in the bottom of the first to lead No. 2 Plainedge (14-4) in a Nassau Class A semifinal. Plainedge will play No. 1 Island Trees in the best-of-three championship, beginning Monday at 4 p.m. at Mitchel Athletic Complex.

Monday, May 14 (at higher seed)

(1) Island Trees 6, (9) Wantagh 1

Alannah Basile threw a three-hitter with 11 strikeouts and Samantha Basile went 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBIs to lead No. 1 Island Trees (17-2) in the Nassau Class A quarters. Island Trees plays No. 4 Clarke in the semis, Thursday at 4 p.m. at Mitchel Field. No. 9 Wantagh is 12-5.

(4) Clarke 3, (5) New Hyde Park 2

Aly Smith singled in Alyssa Colletti from third with the go-ahead run in the fifth inning for No. 4 Clarke (11-6) over No. 5 New Hyde Park in the Class A quarterfinals. Danielle Ferrara went 2-for-2 with two RBIs while Sarach Cornell pitched a three-hitter with 12 strikeouts. Clarke will play the winner of No. 1 Island Trees/No. 9 Wantagh, Thursday at 4 p.m. at Mitchel Field.

(3) Floral Park 3, (6) Bethpage 2

Sam Perri went 2-for-3 with three RBIs, including a two-run single in the bottom of the fourth to give No. 3 Floral Park (14-6) a 3-1 lead over No. 6 Bethpage in the Class A quarterfinals. Sam Giovanniello allowed four hits and five walks with six strikeouts in the complete game. Floral Park plays the winner of No. 10 Valley Stream South/No. 2 Plainedge, Thursday at Mitchel Park at 4 p.m.

(2) Plainedge 3, (10) Valley Stream South 0

Senior Kim Nowak pitched her first career perfect game with eight strikeouts for No. 2 Plainedge (13-4) over No. 10 Valley Stream South in the Class A quarterfinals. Jackie Oleksak hit a two out, bases-loaded double in the bottom of the sixth to provide all the scoring. Plainedge will play No. 3 Floral Park, Thursday at 4 p.m. at Mitchel Field.

Saturday, May 12 (at higher seed)

(1) Island Trees 15, (16) Lawrence 0

Nicole Pellegrino went 2-for-2 with two home runs, six RBIs and three runs and Alannah Basile (three innings) and Ashley Melendez (two innings) combined on a five-inning one-hitter to lead No. 1 Island Trees (16-2) in the first round of the Nassau Class A playoffs. Sophomore Jenn Crowley, freshman Sam Scharff and freshman Kelly Cembrale each had their first career varsity hits. Island Trees hosts No. 9 Wantagh in the quarters, Monday at 4:30 p.m. No. 16 Lawrence is 4-8.

(9) Wantagh 1, (8) North Shore 0

Taylor Corwin threw an eight-hit shutout with six strikeouts and went 1-for-3 and scored on Kellie Mignoli's sacrifice fly in the top of the sixth to lead No. 9 Wantagh (12-4) in the first round of the Nassau Class A playoffs. Christine Kiefer went 1-for-3 and made a lead-preserving catch in the bottom of the sixth with runners on first and second. Wantagh visits No. 1 Island Trees in the quarters, Monday at 4:30 p.m. Lexi Marshall struck out 16 for No. 8 North Shore (11-5).

(5) New Hyde Park 2, (12) Division 0

Lisa O'Callaghan struck out four in five innings and Gina Fornataro pitched two innings of relief for the safe as the duo combined for a shutout for No. 5 New Hyde Park (7-10) over No. 12 Division in the first round of the Nassau Class A playoffs. Kayla Robinson went 2-for-3, Melissa Mastoridis went 2-for-2 with an RBI and Julianna Dunne went 1-for-3 with an RBI for the Gladiators who advance to play at No. 4 Clarke in the quarterfinals Monday at 4:30 p.m.

(4) Clarke 8, (13) Mineola 1

Sarah Cornell threw a two-hitter with 15 strikeouts, Danielle Ferrara went 3-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs and Aly Smith went 2-for-3 with three RBIs to lead No. 4 Clarke (10-6) in the first round of the Nassau Class A playoffs. Clarke hosts No. 5 New Hyde Park in the quarters, Monday at 4:30 p.m. No. 13 Mineola is 9-5.

(3) Floral Park 6, (14) Sewanhaka 2

Sam Giovanniello threw a five-hitter with 12 strikeouts and no walks and went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs to lead No. 3 Floral Park in the first round of the Class A playoffs. Riley Anderson went 3-for-4 with an RBI. Floral Park hosts the Bethpage/Glen Cove winner in the quarters, Monday at 4:30 p.m. No. 14 Sewanhaka is 8-5.

(6) Bethpage 9, (11) Glen Cove 5

Jessica Lewis went 2-for-4 with three RBIs, Danielle Nendza went 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs and Breanna Black went 2-for-2 with two runs and three stolen bases to lead No. 6 Bethpage (5-11) in the first round of the Nassau Class AA playoffs. Bethpage plays at No. 3 Floral Park in the quarters, Monday at 4:30 p.m.

(10) Valley Stream South 12, (7) Seaford 1

Danielle Bowker hit a grand slam in the top of the first, Ashley Tkacsik threw a six-hitter with seven strikeouts and added a two-run home run and Cassie Howley went 3-for-4 with two triples as No. 10 VSS (8-9) knocked off defending county champion Seaford in the first round of the Nassau Class A playoffs. It VSS' first playoff win since since 2005. VSS visits No. 2 Plainedge in the quarters.

(2) Plainedge 12, (15) Roslyn 0

Kate Finnen went 4-for-4 with three runs and two RBIs, Taylor Curran went 3-for-3 with three runs and a stolen base and Kim Nowak allowed only three hits in a five-inning shutout to lead No. 2 Plainedge (12-4) in the first round of the Nassau Class A playoffs. Plainedge will host No. 10 Valley Stream South in the quarters, Monday at 4:30 p.m. No. 15 Roslyn is 10-7.
