If the last four field hockey seasons have taught us anything, it's that Katie Trombetta is good with goals -- scoring them, achieving them. Add another to the list.

The Sachem East junior was selected to tour with USA Field Hockey's junior national team this spring. She was among 18 girls from across the country named to the Under-17 travel squad, which was announced last week.

Trombetta, a midfielder, was named Newsday's Player of the Year last season after leading Long Island with 40 points and her Flaming Arrows to a second consecutive Class A state championship. She also was named an All-American for the second time.

Team USA's selection process began in July, when 102 of the nation's best high school players competed in Junior National Camp tryouts at UMass. That group was whittled down, with the top performers receiving invites to a winter camp at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif., last month. From there, the top 18 were chosen for the travel team that will tour internationally this spring.

"I like traveling and seeing different things, that's exciting," said Trombetta, who committed to the University of Michigan in October.

As for how far she hopes to go with field hockey: "Wherever it takes me."

No official announcement has been made yet about where the team will travel and against whom it will compete, but the tour is expected to hit Europe.

Trombetta quit the basketball team to spend the winter training in preparation for the tryout. "I want to be in the best shape I can," she said in December. The plan included hiring a trainer with the goal of improving "my upper-body strength and core, and lots of endurance work."

    Another objective met.

"My parents give everything to me," Trombetta said of her motivation, "and a way to give back to them is trying to be a good student, good on the field, be a good person. I also want to do it for myself; achieve everything I can and be the best I can be."
