A little rain never hurt anyone.
Bethpage’s Danny Chillianis didn’t let unfavorable weather conditions stop him as he scored three touchdowns, two on the ground and rushed for 107 yards to lead Bethpage past Manhasset 29-7 on MSG Varsity’s Friday Night Football.
After both teams traded possessions in the first quarter, Bethpage jumped out to an early lead with 5:01 to go early on. Starting with good field position after a near-blocked punt, Golden Eagles quaterback Justin Rohr put the ball in Chillianis’ hands and let him do the rest, running the ball 35 yards for the score.
Chillianis got in on the point-after conversion, making a leading overheaded catch close to the back of the end zone to give Bethpage an early 8-0 lead.
With Manhasset maintaining possession late in the first quarter, Bethpage and Chillianis struck again. The star halfback who also doubles on defense snuck in front of a Manhasset receiver and intercepted a pass by quarterback Kevin Overlander. He ran it 66 yards for the touchdown and with 28 seconds left in the first quarter, Bethpage held on to a 15-0 lead.
Manhasset got on the board with a big play of its own in the second quarter. Overlander connected with two-sport start Ryan Matthews for a long 68 yard pass to put Manhasset back within seven points.
However Chillianis would strike again in the third quarter, this time from close range with a one-yard touchdown to increase Bethpage’s lead to 22-7.
The Golden Eagles would add an insurance score with 4:44 left in the game when Joe Sacklow blocked a Phillip Boukas punt, and fell on the ball in the end zone for a Bethpage touchdown and an eventual 29-7 win.
