It was a match in which points were scarce, pins were demanding and two matches spilled into overtime. Smithtown East seniors Tylar Vigliarolo and Steven Bair, two of the Bulls' top returning wrestlers, set the tone for the match and helped lead Smithtown East to a 31-28 victory over Northport Wednesday.

Already trailing 2-0 in the early going of his 160-pound matchup against Northport's Tom Digiglio, Vigliarolo started to bleed from his nose. After a quick recovery period he regained his composure but still found himself trailing 3-1 going into the final period.

Smithtown East coach Dave Cummings had made a decision to move each of his wrestlers from the 145-pounds to 170-pounds up one class, and now his star faced a deficit against a bigger opponent.

"Tylar's also been dealing with a rough start to the season -- nicked up and little injuries -- and I was a little concerned with him being bumped up," Cummings said.

Overcoming his nicks and pains, the experienced grappler secured a takedown with just 20 seconds remaining to grab the 4-3 victory.

"It was all knowing how much time I had left on the clock and watching 55 seconds go to 22 seconds and knowing that I had to take a shot now to win this match," Vigliarolo said. "My whole goal is to know that I need to win not by 50 points but by one point -- it's all about pulling out the win. I just waited until I had the perfect chance to secure the victory and that was it."

Bair's opening match at 132 pounds went into overtime after the senior tied it with just 55 seconds remaining. Bair took the lead in the first overtime and rode out the final 1:30 for the win over Northport's Mark Tomasello.

For two young teams battling early in the season it took a few veterans to lead the way.

"It was important because we needed the boost right away to start off the match," Bair said. "I wish I had done a little better than I did but it was still what we needed to start off."
