Wantagh’s dominance was in full effect on Tuesday evening.

Behind the effort of four pins, two technical falls and two decisions to go along with five weight classes forfeited by Herricks, the Wantagh Warriors were victorious by the final of 70-9 in Conference 2B play.

Kyle Quinn, ranked number one in the county for the 106-pound weight class, gave Wantagh (15-0) the momentum right away with a pin of Matt Mach in 1:01 of the first period.

That would set the table for Mike Gianetti (113lb.), Joe Hill (120), Chris Araoz (126), Matt Langan (132), and Vinny Turano (138) who would all successfully follow Quinn’s effort. Gianetti and Langan would each put their opponent on their back with 1:52 and 4:36 pins respectively, while Araoz and Turano would post flawless 15-0 technical falls.

“[I] definitely want to win a county championship, I’ve been trying to do that since eighth grade,” said the senior Araoz. “I really want to win a state championship.”

The six consecutive individual bout winning streak of the Warriors would be put to an end in the 145-pound weight class. Mike Vespi had the match of the night for the Highlanders (5-1) as he fundamentally defeated Larry Grief with a third period technical fall. The 15-0 victory would put Herricks on the board for the first time while cutting Wantagh’s edge to 37-5.

“I would like to be All-County. I run after every practice and go to the gym to lift, so whatever it takes,” says Vespi. “We might not have the amount of guys that other teams have, but we are still working hard.”

Jason Liarikus of Herricks would claim the 152-pound weight class to make it a 37-9 lead, but the Highlanders would need to forfeit the following four weight classes to ensure the Wantagh victory.

Wantagh’s T.J. Ragusa was the final pin of the night in the 285-pound weight class as the athletic big man was able to get Solomon Aziz on his back 28 seconds into the second period to complete the match.
