WEST ISLIP, NY -- The Lions are back in familiar territory.
West Islip, the eight-time defending Suffolk County Class 'A' champions and MSG Varsity's No. 2-ranked boys lacrosse team, topped Sachem North 10-5 in the Suffolk Class 'A' semifinals from West Islip High School.
In what seemed like a defensive struggle in the first ten minutes of the game, West Islip exploded with 2:36 remaining in the opening frame as Tom Moore would score his first of three goals on the afternoon. Moore took a cross-field pass from Anthony DeLuca and caught Sachem North goaltender John Quinn moving and potted it far side to give the Lions a 1-0 lead.
Moore answered yet again with just 1.7 seconds remaining, firing an overhander from 10-yards out that found its way top corner past Quinn for the 2-0 advantage.
DeLuca opened things in the second quarter, but not without some flair. After Quinn made an impressive kick save, DeLuca retrieved the loose ball rebound at the top of the crease and while falling whipped a shot from behind his back in the open cage to give West Islip a three-goal lead. Exactly two minutes later, DeLuca added his second of the game for the 4-0 lead.
West Islip continued the onslaught as Moore capped off the hat trick 40 seconds later, followed by Jon Reese's first of the afternoon. Reese tallied his second of the game near the end of the half off a feed from junior Nick Aponte
West Islip eventually got off to a commanding 7-1 lead at the half to which Sachem North could never recover.
Shawn Murphy and Joseph Caridi both had a pair of goals for the Flaming Arrows in the loss.
The Lions will look to make it nine in a row on Wednesday as they have a date set with MSG Varsity's No. 7-ranked boys lacrosse team, Ward Melville, which defeated Smithtown West 13-9 in the other semifinal matchup.
