2011 All-New Jersey field hockey team
Meet the athletes who excelled during the 2011 field hockey season. The teams were selected by MSG Varsity New Jersey staff writers:
FIRST TEAM
AILEEN JOHNSON
PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Shore, Sr., Midfielder
Johnson registered 61 goals and 29 assists for a team that won the Group 1 title, but lost in first round of Tournament of Champions. The Duke-bound superstar was name first-team All-Shore midfielder sophomore year, hurt junior year, going to Duke
NATALIE CAFONE
West Essex, Sr., Midfielder
The Iowa-bound Cafone enjoyed a spectacular senior season during which she eclipsed the 100-career goal mark, while helping her team to a Group 2 crown and an appearance in the Tournament of Champions.
EMILY WOLD
Freehold Boro, Sr., Midfielder
Featured on the fall cover of MSG Varsity The Magazine, Wold produced a season that mirrored her 50-goal, 25-assist junior campaign. In September, she recorded her 70th career goal and broke her school’s previous record held by Meghan Gilbson (’08). Wold’s heroics enabled her team to win the Group 3 title, but it lost in first round of Tournament of Champions.
SAMANTHA BROWNE
West Milford, Sr., Midfielder
Browne scored 35 goals and dished out 10 assists for a team that reached the semifinals in Group 3.
NATALIA MAURILLO
Chatham, Sr., Forward
Maurillo has been a major reason for Chatham’s success over the last few years, and 2011 was no different. The forward netted 38 goals and recorded 14 assists for a team that reached the North 1 Group 2 semifinals.
CATHERINE CARO
Bridgewater-Raritan, Jr., Forward
Caro netted 31 goals and amassed 27 assists during her fantastic junior season for a North 1 Group 4 title-winning squad. She now has 91 career goals, and will look to make another leap toward stardom as a senior leader in 2012.
AMANDA CASSERA
West Essex, Jr., Forward
The junior sensation developed into the perfect complement to superstar teammate Natalie Cafone. Cassera scored 30 goals and notched 24 assists for the Group 2 title-winners and Tournament of Champions runner-ups.
TERESA BENVENUTI
Oak Knoll, Sr., Forward
The Princeton-bound senior racked up 37 goals and 19 assists for her team, which lost in final round of North 2 Group 1 playoffs.
TAYLOR MYGATT
Bridgewater-Raritan, Sr., Defender
Mygatt posted 11 goals and 20 assists, and anchored a strong defensive unit that helped Bridgewater capture the North 1 Group 4 final. The senior finished with 44 career goals.
ELIZABETH JACOBSEN
Oak Knoll, Sr., Defender
Jacobsen produced 11 goals and 18 assists to follow up a tremendous junior campaign in which she was recognized as the Union County Player of the Year.
MELISSA LAIBLE
West Essex, Sr., Goalkeeper
The state’s best backstop turned aside 79 shots, leading her team to an appearance in the Tournament of Champions final after clinching the Group 2 crown.
