Chatham gets top seed in Morris County
Chatham's first-ever victory over mighty Delbarton three weeks ago has clearly paid dividends for the Cougars beyond that one accomplishment.
Chatham, No. 9 in The MSG Varsity New Jersey Power Rankings, earned the No. 1 seed Tuesday night ahead of No. 4 and defending champion Delbarton for the 25th Morris County Tournament, the state's oldest of its kind. This is Chatham's first top seed in the MCT.
Chatham (9-4) has lost three of its last four games while Delbarton (8-3) extended its winning streak to seven Monday with a 15-5 decision over West Morris. That streak began, however, following a 5-4 loss to Chatham April 10. The Cougars were led that day by Kyle Howard-Johnson with two goals, goalie Corey Fritts with seven saves and the hard-nosed defense protecting him.
Seventh-ranked Mountain Lakes (7-2) picked up the No. 3 seed and 14th-ranked Mount Olive (11-1) gained the No. 4 seed, followed by 5-Kinnelon, 6-Montville, 7-Morristown and 8-West Morris. Mountain Lakes and Delbarton are tied with 11 county titles apiece and Kinnelon owns the other two crowns, claiming the inaugural tournament in 1988 and also winning in 2010.
Four preliminary games must be completed by Saturday and first-round games by Tuesday at the fields of the higher seeds. The quarterfinals are May 10 at the higher seeds and the semifinals are set as a doubleheader May 12 at Madison High at noon and 2 p.m. The 25th championship will be decided May 15 at FDU Florham Park at 7:30 p.m.
