The boys basketball season is finally upon us. Get geared up by reviewing the top players in the Garden State.
All players are listed alphabetically
1. Kyle Anderson, Sr., Forward, 6-foot-7, St. Anthony: Anderson, a UCLA commit, is hands-down the top player in the Garden State. His high basketball I.Q. and exceptional passing abilities for a point forward make the nationally ranked Friars a favorite to repeat as Tournament of Champions winners.
2. Dallas Anglin, Sr., Guard, 6-foot-2, Seton Hall Prep: With former teammate Sterling Gibbs down at Texas, Anglin is poised to elevate his scoring numbers and transform into one of the most dominant guards in the state. He is committed to Hofstra.
3. Isaiah Briscoe, Fr., Guard, 6-foot-3, St. Benedict’s Prep: Brisoe is just a freshman, but is already being courted by some of the top college programs in the country. The flashy point guard, who will likely start alongside fellow guards Tyler Ennis and Melvin Johnson, has gotten six offers and has drawn interest from Duke, Kentucky, UConn and Syracuse, among others. Tabbed as a top-five player in the Class of 2015, Briscoe is the real deal.
4. Reggie Cameron, Jr., Forward, 6-foot-7, Hudson Catholic: Like Kyle Anderson, Cameron was forced to leave Paterson Catholic upon its closing in 2010. Since then, the high Division I recruit has blossomed. The small forward, along with a bevy of talented role players, will propel the Hawks this season.
5. Tariq Carey, Sr., Guard, 6-foot-2, St. Anthony: It’s no wonder schools such as LaSalle, Southern Methodist, Iona, Providence and TCU are interested in Carey. The point guard from Newark landed with Hall of Fame coach Bob Hurley this season after spending his previous high school campaigns at East Side. Look for him to serve as Kyle Anderson’s sidekick, much like graduated point guard Myles Mack (Rutgers) did in 2010-11.
6. Charles Cooke, Sr, forward, 6-foot-5, Trenton Catholic: The James Madison commit will help the Iron Mikes reestablish themselves as a force to be reckoned with in the Garden State. Just two years removed from clinching the Tournament of Champions crown, Trenton Catholic will benefit from Cooke’s senior leadership.
7. Quenton DeCosey, Sr., Forward, 6-foot-5, St. Joseph (Metuchen): The super-scorer chose Temple over Penn State, West Virginia and Virginia Tech. He poured in over 600 points last season and will likely make the Falcons an on-the-rise force this winter.
8. Tyler Ennis, Jr., Guard, 6-foot-3, St. Benedict’s Prep: The Toronto native transferred to St. Benedict’s Prep last January and has since developed into New Jersey’s most prolific playmaker. Ennis has garnered offers from Kansas, Louisville, Oregon State and Rutgers, among others.
9. Sekou Harris, Sr., Guard, 5-foot-10, Plainfield: You’d be hard-pressed to find a more energetic or quicker floor general than Harris. He is one of the many Division I recruits on the revamped Cardinals, who fell to St. Anthony in the Tournament of Champions final last March. Thanks to Harris, his team will make another convincing run at the state’s highest form of glory.
10. Dominic Hoffman, Sr., Forward, 6-foot-7, Gill St Bernard’s: Hoffman shows the Fighting Uggs aren’t just a perimeter threat. The power forward gives his team a multi-dimensional look, and is a major reason why it is ranked among the top 25 in the nation to start the season. He chose Bucknell over Penn, Lafayette and Rider.
11. Melvin Johnson, Sr., Guard, 6-foot-3, St. Benedict’s Prep: A transfer from Rice (N.Y.), which closed its doors this year, the Miami-bound Johnson is one of many reasons by the Gray Bees will recapture their national prominence.
12. Chris Jones, Sr., Guard, 6-foot-4, Teaneck: Jones, a high Division I recruit, is the biggest scoring threat in Bergen County. Behind their star senior, the Highwaymen will make a push to repeat as county champions.
13. Tyler Roberson, Jr., Forward, 6-foot-7, Roselle Catholic: After transferring from Union prior the school year, Roberson will make the Lions a convincing championship force. The athletic forward, who could wind up being a true NBA prospect, has been offered by Syracuse, Pitt, Cincinnati, Kansas State and Rutgers, among others.
14. Justin Sears, Sr., Forward, 6-foot-7, Plainfield: Sears, a tremendous student who committed to Yale this fall, helped the Cardinals capture the Group 3 championship and finish as a finalist in the Tournament of Champions.
15. Jaren Sina, Jr., Guard, 6-foot-2, Gill St. Bernard’s: The state’s best long-range shooter verbally committed to Alabama as a sophomore, but retracted his statement in October. Now, Sina will be one of the most coveted recruits in the country, while he helps Gill St. Bernard’s build off last season’s 26-3 record.
