    Lakeland escapes Wayne undefeated

Brooke Geyer scored twice and that was just enough to propel Lakeland to a 2-1 win over rival Wayne Valley on Thursday night.

After dominating first half play and outshooting Valley 9-0, the Lancers found themselves backpedaling as a strong second half by the Indians threatened Lakeland's 14-game unbeaten streak.

Geyer's first tally came off of a great setup by Tina Brindisi who played a free ball from 20 yards out right to the doorstep for Geyer to flick home.

The only reason Geyer and company didn't break the game open early was the stellar play of Alex Piekarz. The junior netminder turned away eight of nine shots -- a few from point blank range -- during the first 30 and kept her team close enough for a second half push.

It looked as if the field at Wayne Valley was slanted because from the onset of the second half the action trended towards the same side of field, this time with the Lancers defending and onslaught by Valley.

A second goal by Geyer proved no deterrent as the Indians continually peppered sophomore goalie Amanda Birkner but the quick small and agile Birkner was all over the place making stops.

It would take until the 22 minute mark for Valley to finally get the break it needed. After a couple chances were denied by Birkner on a first wave of attacking play, Valley would use a turnover to create some instant offense.

Cassandra Gerrard would receive the ball left of the Lakeland cage and did well to bury a shot from five yards out and just like that you could feel the pressure skyrocket.

The Indians would continue to bombard Birkner with shots but the sophomore stood tall for Lakeland. When it was all said and done senior night wasn't exactly the script either team drew up but the Lancers will certainly take the win and a 14-0-1 record as we move into tournament time.
