LI Week 2 football preview

Smithtown West (0-1) at Newfield (1-0), Division II, Friday, 7 p.m.

Devante McFarlane of HHHW ran all over the Smithtown defense in the opener. West is much better than that and Newfield is coming off a tough win over rugged Deer Park. Can the Newfield offense get in gear or does Smithtown get the upset and get in the win column?

Longwood (1-0) at Floyd (1-0), Division I, Saturday, 1:30 p.m.

Floyd has been the one school that Longwood never seems to beat. But this Longwood team boasts a massive offensive line behind Omari Palmer and a stifling defense with Darius Greene. Can standout halfback Stacey Bedell find room to run?

West Babylon (1-0) at East Islip (0-1), Division II, Saturday, 1:30 p.m.

Top-seeded East Islip allowed 38 points to Riverhead. The West Babylon offense has more weapons than Riverhead, including fleet-footed quarterback Clifton Melhado and wide out Michael Richardson. Does East Islip start the season at 0-2?

Garden City (1-0) at Wantagh (1-0), Conference II, Saturday, 1:30 p.m.

Garden City opened with a 45-0 shutout of Westbury behind two touchdowns apiece from Danny Miller and Mark Ellis. Wantagh scored all of its points in the first half in a 27-0 win over Calhoun as Nick Mullen passed for three touchdowns.

Lynbrook (1-0) at Plainedge (1-0), Conference III, Saturday, 1:30 p.m.

Two teams that score in bunches. The Owls posted a 38-6 lead over Glen Cove before winning, 38-20. Plainedge scored 42 points in three quarters to beat Sewanhaka, 42-14.

Roosevelt (1-0) at East Rockaway (1-0), Conference IV, Saturday, 1:30 p.m.

East Rockaway came back with 14 fourth quarter points to edge Island trees, 14-6. Roosevelt beat Clarke, 26-18, in the first-ever game played by Long island schools at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse.

Stepinac (1-0) at Chaminade (1-0), CHSFL, Saturday, 1:30 p.m.

Chaminade is looking to build on an opening game win and Stepinac is up from Class A after a 12-0 campaign in 2010.

Babylon (1-0) at Amityville (1-0), Division IV, Friday, 7 p.m.

Amityville and quarterback Sean Walters move into the division and challenge Babylon and Glenn for the title. This is the first big test for the Warriors.
