Top NJ players sticking with Rutgers
Uncertainty is the word that comes up the most when a coach leaves behind a college program, dozens of players and potential recruits unsure of what the future holds.
For new Rutgers head coach Kyle Flood, keeping the homegrown talent at home means keeping the future of college football strong in Piscataway.
After retaining the commitment of highly sought-after Darius Hamilton from Don Bosco, Flood has managed to keep a lot of the state’s top talent in house and it’s an impressive crop of freshmen to say the least.
On the offensive side of the ball, fellow Ironmen Leonte Caroo will join another wideout in Piscataway, Ruhan Peele of Linden. Peele announced today that he was also keeping his commitment as well and both will add depth at wideout for the Scarlet Knights along with heavily recruited Davon Jacobs of DePaul Catholic, who entertained 16 different offers from top programs before choosing Rutgers this summer.
With the late commitment of Peele and cornerback Jevon Tyree from South Brunswick, the growing list of New Jersey players includes some of the top playmakers from both sides of the ball a year ago.
Delon Stephenson is one of those playmakers and will add a spark no matter where Flood decides to use the versatile athlete. Big Julian Pinnix-Odrick from Montclair will help bolster the defensive line as the senior had offers from Michigan State, Boston College, Penn State and many others before deciding to stay with Rutgers.
Under Leo Ciappina at Saddle Brook, Steve Longa flourished as a two-way player but will now focus on the defensive side of the ball as the 6-foot-1 210-pound Longa moves to linebacker on a permanent basis for coach Flood.
As the dust begins to settle on this year's signing day Rutgers finds itself with one of the top recruiting classes in the nation and reason to look ahead after the departure of Schiano. The future is bright thanks to a bunch of talented Jersey boys staying local.
