Scott helps Ridge outlast Immaculata
Ridge mirrored its play of the last two weeks against its bitter rival, ultimately making Saturday afternoon's Skyline Conference battle a successful one.
The Red Devils extended their winning streak to six games upon edging Immaculata, 7-5, thanks to a clutch, two-goal performance by Eric Scott and his supporting cast.
Ridge (10-2), No. 6 in the MSG Varsity power rankings, has been fabulous in all aspects of its game since absorbing a 10-6 loss to Chatham April 12. The Red Devils outscored their next five opponents, 64-18, behind the offensive firepower of Scott, Connor Meth, and J.T. Palldino and the rugged defensive efforts of Chris Palladino, Mitchell Gray and Brian Mangion.
In this one, Scott snapped a 5-5 tie by weaving through the defense and bouncing a shot past the opposing goaltender with 7:40 remaining in the fourth quarter. The Red Devils added insurance with a tally at the 1:40 mark.
Alex Gaydos and Meth also posted two goals for Ridge, which saw head coach Ken Marsh clinch his 150th career victory.
Immaculata (3-6) played a strong contest, but has been on a season-long search for consistency after losing so many talented veterans from the 2011 squad that snared a third straight Non-Public B state title and also defeated Ridge twice.
The Spartans' low came last Saturday when they were dominated by Bridgewater-Raritan, 14-0, for coach Chuck Apel's 400th career victory. However, they have to be encouraged by the play of George Markey, who scored three times in this setback.
Connor Vanderbeek, Jake Eisenstodt also tallied for Immaculata, which erased a 2-0 first-quarter deficit by constructing a 3-0 run in the second.
Markey tied the game at 5 with 8:25 to go, but the offense was silenced by Ridge for the rest of the way.
