The Olsen Files notebook: Day 2
Day 2: February 23, 2012
It’s day two and I'm still pumped from the excitement and adrenaline from day one. The meeting with Lardy, Quick, Leandra and the rest of the crew, coupled with our first day of shooting Kevin, only proved to me why this all makes sense. I truly understood why we are following him for the next 11 months, and why he is the No. 1 QB prospect in the country for the 2012-13 season.
Today is “family day” at the Olsen compound and we get the unique opportunity to really go beyond the field, beyond the weight room and beyond the recruiting process. We get to see what makes Kevin so special. It all starts with family.
Roy Pokorny (cameraman extraordinaire) and I head the Olsen den. We get to the house and what do we see in the middle of the front yard? A “for sale” sign? I thought it was a prank for our camera. But instead, the Olsen's are playing with the housing market and if they get a serious offer, they will sell.
As we walk up to the house, Coach greets us on the front porch with his new friend, Willy, an 18 month old boxer. Their previous dog, "Blitz," died a few months back and they decided to give their other companion, "Heisman" the beagle, a new friend to keep him company. So now its Willy and Heisman.
We meet the entire family, brothers Chris and Greg, mom Sue, Greg's college sweetheart and now wife Kara and two new additions to the family. Baby Tate (Greg and Kara's first born son) and Chris' new fiancé whom he met in Chicago one year ago, and where they both still reside.
Ironically, she grew up in Wayne and went to Wayne hills in the mid 90's, how crazy is that? She is extremely nice, and very quiet. Her quietness is completely opposite of the always comical and outgoing Chris. She is welcomed with open arms by all members of the Olsen clan. I guess she made a great impression. This group can be overwhelming- but not for Elena. She handles this gregarious group with aplomb and passes muster with flying colors.
Roy and I get interesting and informative interviews with each member of the family. Coach takes us downstairs and walks us down memory lane. On the walls are old pictures, and while videos and memorabilia of the boys are stacked on the shelves. Mom, Sue, takes us on a picture tour throughout the house which leads us right into Kevin's room. Of course, like any caring mother, she made us wait five minutes while she cleaned up the 17 year old's sanctuary before we could enter. When I was Kevin’s age it used to take my mom five days to make my room presentable.
Overall, we got some great footage of the family being together under one roof in New Jersey- as it rarely happens. We know are very lucky. It was special. Stories of Kevin as a child- for example Kevin ordering $20 grilled cheese's at Greg's draft party down in Miami while floating in the pool flirting with all the “babes” as a young 12 year old. The guy is a player and he was still in middle school. Everyone was laughing at the site and so happy Greg's super agent Drew Rosenhaus picked up the tab!
It was truly an eventful day and it has me looking forward to our next adventure. Next up? One on one workouts at the high school with an NFL player named Greg Olsen. I guarantee this is gonna be intense!
