Wood-Ridge used several big runs to cruise past Hawthorne in two games, 25-20, 26-24, in a girls volleyball showdown on Monday afternoon.
The match was live-streamed exclusively on MSGVarsity.com.
Sam Kronyak recorded eight kills and five digs, while Alyssa Aitkens added four aces, and Erin Carson had 13 assists for the Blue Devils, who improved to 13-6.
Wood-Ridge was coming off a tough, 2-0 loss to Midland Park in which it fell by scores of 25-18 and 25-12 on Saturday. Prior to that setback, the Blue Devils had rattled off four straight wins.
Fresh off a 2-0 victory over Manchester Regional, the Bears were enjoying a torrid stretch that also produced wins over Lodi and Paterson Eastside after falling to Bergen Tech on October 10.
However, Hawthorne could not find a way to extend its winning streak to four despite a strong start in the first game. It ran away with an 18-11 lead in the latter parts of that session, but eventually fell when Wood-Ridge flipped the switch and took a 19-18 lead before going on a 6-0 run to close out the triumph.
"Once we started getting some points, our whole attitude changed," Kronyak said.
In the second game, the Blue Devils got off to a 6-0 start. Hawthorne showed plenty of fight by catching up and establishing a comfortable lead -- that ballooned as high as 23-18 -- before faltering once the opposition registered a final 8-1 run.
