WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. — At Archbishop Stepinac High School, Austin Taps, Jesse Gwin, and Przemyslaw Popek signed their letters of intent to accept scholarships to play football in college.
Taps, the MSG Varsity Hudson Valley player of the year, and an All-Metro second teamer, will head to the Ivy League and the University of Pennsylvania next fall. Taps led the Crusaders to one of their finest seasons in school history and a berth in the CHSFL AAA championship game.
Jesse Gwin is off to C.W. Post next season after paving the way up front for Stepinac’s prolific offense. Gwin was a catalyst on the offensive line at the center position as the Crusaders rolled to over 4,000 yards in 2011.
Popek, one of the area’s best kickers, signed with Stony Brook. The 6-foot, 170 pound Popek was a weapon in the kicking and punting game for Stepinac this season. He blasted field goals as long as 47 yards and had a touchback rate of 43% on kickoffs.
