Long Beach proved it can domninate either county.
Long Beach beat Syosset, 10-1, to capture the Nassau Michelino hockey championship on Wednesday, a year after the Marines were crowned Suffolk champs. Long Beach played in the Suffolk League last season due to an insurance dispute.
Evan Schwartz scored a hat trick and Tom McGovern had five assists as Long Beach won Game 2 of the best-of-three series. Long Beach took the first game of the series Tuesday, 4-2.
"This is huge to win a championship like this," Schwartz said. "The hat trick just means so much [more] to me in this kind of a game."
The Marines put an end to Syosset's hopes early, taking a 5-1 lead after just one period. The score was tied at one when Schwartz scored his first of three power-play goals at 7:47, receiving a centering pass from Nolan Pues from the left corner. Rob Delury scored twice in the period and Pues and McGovern each had multiple assists to help put the Marines well out in front.
Long Beach scored nine unanswered goals after breaking the 1-1 tie in the first.
"We know where to put the puck and we know how to finish it," McGovern said. "The powerplay was big, obviously."
Long Beach earned its first Michelino Championship since the 2005-2006 season and will look to defend its small school state title beginning March 2.
"That'd be the biggest thing to win the state championship," Schwartz said. "The biggest."
