Somers had waited long enough. They’d run through the gauntlet that is Class A football in Section 1. They endured the scheduling mayhem from Hurricane Sandy, a cancellation from a snow storm on Wednesday and then waltzed through four quarters against a dangerous Sleepy Hollow attack.

On late Thursday night, the Tuskers were finally able to celebrate. And they did it in style.

One by one, the Somers players sprinted from the mob at midfield to the snow banks behind the end zone. They dove onto the piles, firing snowballs and doing snow angels after a convincing and overpowering effort.

Somers defeated Sleepy Hollow 42-13 in the Section 1 Class A title game at Somers, enduing a stressful playoff run that had been sidetracked twice by weather. The Tuskers overcame it all to bring legendary coach Tony DeMatteo his second sectional title at Somers, ninth overall and 302nd win in his career.

It’s a quick turnaround for the Tuskers, who have to regroup and take on Section 9 champion Cornwall in the state quarterfinals on Monday at 1 p.m. at Mahopac High School.

Stefano Bickense and Joe Lombardo, a pair of seniors, were in the center of it all for Somers. Bicknese ran for 156 yards and two touchdowns on 19 carries, caught two passes for 70 yards and a score and intercepted two passes on defense. Lombardo had 72 yards rushing and two touchdowns and had nine tackles defensively.

The Somers defense forced six turnovers, five of which the offense converted into touchdowns. Bicknese intercepted a pass on the first play of the game at midfield, setting an early tone in the title game.

The Tuskers led 13-0 in the second quarter before Devin Lopez led a scoring drive for the Headless Horsemen. Lopez threw for 161 yards and a touchdown pass to Ezekiel Sierra. Sleepy had the ball again before the half and drove to midfield.

But an interception by Connor Vlasaty and a personal foul penalty set up a gorgeous 14-yard touchdown pass on a pump-and-go from John Decker to Joe Festo in the final minute of the half.

Somers cashed in on turnovers on its next two possessions to break the game open at 35-7. The Headless Horsemen threatened when Dionel Infante returned a kickoff for a touchdown. But the Tuskers locked down defensively after that.
