Arlington cruises past Panas

CROSS RIVER, N.Y. – Behind the solid pitching of Samantha Ferris and powerful hitting of center fielder Alyssa Cuzzola, Arlington stormed past Walter Panas, 16-0, in the consolation game of the John Jay tournament on Saturday.
Ferris, a lefty, struck out 11 through just five innings and scattered five hits to earn the win. The game ended after five innings due to the mercy rule.
“She did a very nice job of moving the ball around,” said Arlington coach Nancy Schroeder, whose team improved to 7-8. “She had good presence in the circle and did a nice job of mixing up her pitches.”
Cuzzola finished 4 for 4 with seven RBI including an inside-the-park three-run home run in the first inning. She followed that with a two-RBI single in the second inning and Jordan Minckler brought her home with a triple to extend the lead to 6-0.
“I worked on just staying back and staying more relaxed,” said Cuzzola, who also had a two-RBI double in the third inning to make it 10-0. “I stayed back in the box and was just making sure my hands were going straight through.”
Kaitlyn Iacomini had a triple and two RBI. Iacomini, Kaci Cobb, Karlie Brady and Jackie Santilli each had an RBI in a six-run fourth inning.
“We did a nice job of getting our lead runner on base and either advancing her with a bunt or by a base hit,” Schroeder said. “We took advantage of some errors and were really aggressive today on offense. (Cuzzola) did a nice job of staying patient and waiting for her pitch. She was finding the gaps with her line drives.”
For Panas (7-10), Jessica Cavaliere went 2 for 3 with a double.
After giving up a late lead against Valhalla in the opening round and only registering two runs, the Admirals were determined to bounce back.
“We definitely wanted to come back and leave on a high note,” Cuzzola said.
It’s been an up and down season for Arlington, but the squad is hoping to be playing its best softball with the Section 1 Class AA playoffs starting soon.
“I think if we continue playing like we did today – everyone stayed up and our heads were in it – we have a very good shot at going far,” Cuzzola said. “We just have to stay in it.”
