BREWSTER, N.Y. – Before they knew it, Hendrick Hudson found itself in a 2-0 hole early in the first period against Kennedy Catholic/Putnam Valley on Friday afternoon.

The rest of the game belonged to the Sailors, however.

Hen Hud erupted with eight unanswered goals and cruised to an 8-2 victory at Brewster Ice Arena.

“We started capitalizing more on opportunities and creating more in the offensive zone,” Hen Hud coach Steve Grilli said of what changed after falling behind 2-0. “We dumped it in deep and forechecked in the back of their net.”

Freshman Brett Malinowski notched a hat trick and added an assist. He scored all three of his goals in the third period to help put the game away.

“He’s really a solid hockey player,” Grilli said. “He’s got a great attitude. Our captain, Sean Sweeny, he mentors him.”

The Sailors (2-6-2) took a 3-2 lead on a goal by junior Dillon Persaud with 1:25 left in the first period. They never looked back after that.

Five different players scored for the Sailors. Senior Scott Cole recorded two goals and an assist. Junior Brett Dalton and freshman Tyler Schunk also added goals. Sweeny and junior Matthew Ledwin each had two assists.

After a slow start in net, junior Zachary Shapiro bounced back and didn’t allow a goal for the rest of the contest. He finished with 19 saves.

“He’s always been a great goalie,” Cole said. “He’s there when you need him. You can count on him and he’s not going to let you down.”

This is the Sailors’ first season competing in Section 1 in 10 years. They previously were in the Hudson Valley High School Ice Hockey Association.

Cole said that the level of competition in Section 1 is pretty similar to the former league they played in.

“I just don’t think we’re coming out as strong as we have in the beginning (of games),” Cole said. “It’s a new league and we’re still getting used to it (playing in Section 1). We’re getting there. We’ve got to work harder.”

Gerard Matirano and Austin Johnson netted goals for Kennedy/PV, which fell to 1-8.

GAME NOTES: Eight goals is the most the Sailors have scored in one game all season. Their previous high for one game was four goals. Brett Malinowski and Sean Sweeny lead Hen Hud in scoring with six goals apiece on the season. Eight goals was not the most Kennedy/Putnam Valley has allowed in a game this season. They’ve let up nine goals twice.

    KEYS TO THE GAME
    1. Spreading the wealth: Five different players scored for Hendrick Hudson, led by freshman Brett Malinowski’s hat trick. “We usually get scoring from a lot of different guys, but we don’t score eight goals,” Grilli said. “After having some injuries, we now have all our impact players back. The last two games we lost 6-4 and 6-1. We’re finally getting healthy again. Hopefully we’ll make some noise in the second half (of the season).”
    2. Keep your head up: The Sailors fell in an early 2-0 hole, but didn’t let it faze them. They bounced back and took the lead late in the first period and never looked back. They closed out the game with four goals in the third period.
    3. Shapiro stands tall: After letting up two goals in the first six minutes of the game, Zachary Shapiro stepped up his game and didn’t allow a goal the rest of the way. “I think we also played better defense in the zone in front of him,” Grilli said. “Zach’s a tremendous goalie.”
    4. Youth movement: Four of Hendrick Hudson’s eight goals were scored by freshmen with Malinowski netting three and Tyler Schunk adding one. “A lot of these younger guys are stepping up,” Grilli said. “They’re all hungry to play and get opportunities.”
