Cardinal Spellman trailed for the majority of its CHSAA matchup with host Salesian on Wednesday, but the Pilots turned it on when it mattered most.
Powered by super-sub Desroy Farguharson, Spellman scratched and clawed its way to a narrow 45-44 victory.
Farguharson, who scored all eight of his points in the fourth quarter, drained what turned out to be the game-winning basket with 1:30 left in regulation.
Salesian's Kyle Williams paced the Eagles with a team-high 12 points. Williams, who pulled down a game-high seven rebounds, misfired on a potential game-tying free throw with 5.5 seconds left in regulation. Kerry McAllister added 11 points and four rebounds for the Eagles.
Big man Matt Kerrigan powered Spellman with a game-high 14 points and six rebounds. Teammate Anthony Williams chipped in with 13 points and five rebounds. The duo combined for 15 first-half points to help the Pilots overcome a 10-4 first-quarter deficit.
The Pilots will host St. Joseph's in their next game on Jan. 3, while Salesian will square off against visiting All Hallows on Dec. 30.
