In the past two games, Cornwall threw for over 900 yards coming into the Class A state semifinal with Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake (Section 2). Unfortunately for the Dragons and quarterback Mike White, they hadn’t faced a defense like the Spartans. Burnt Hills’ defensive line chased, hurried, and harassed White for all four quarters and limited the Dragons to just two touchdowns in the 28-13 victory.

It was Cornwall’s third loss in four years to Burnt Hills in the state semifinal round. Burnt Hills advances to the state championship game for the fourth time in the last five years. The Spartans will face Sweet Home (Section 6) in the Carrier Dome in Syracuse on Friday.

“We knew it was going to be a dog fight with them, they’re a great team,” Cornwall coach Marcus Hughes said. “We had some opportunities in the red zone and we didn’t execute.”

Down 14-13 at halftime, Cornwall forced a fumble on the first play of the second half. On second-and-eight from the 17-yard line, White was forced from the pocket and kept the play alive with his legs, but Mike Danz picked off the White pass at the one-yard line to end the threat.

Eight plays and 99 yards later, Burnt Hills was in the end zone on a 10-yard Josh Quesada touchdown run. Backup fullback Dan Maynard had a 60-yard run on the drive.

The Dragons once again drove deep into Burnt Hills territory behind the arm and legs of White, but the Spartans came up with another stop at the two-yard line this time after a dropped pass in the end zone.

For the second consecutive possession, the Spartans drove the length of the field, this time a 15-play, 98-yard drive.

“I think its pretty special when you have kids who can have two 95-plus yard touchdown drives,” Burnt Hills coach Matt Shell said. “There was a lot of good football in those two drives, I am proud of them.”

Burnt Hills kept the pressure on Cornwall’s offensive line throughout and forced White to flush the pocket a lot more often than he’s used to. White finished with 12 carries for 40 yards. In the air, he was 13 of 32 passing for 181 yards and three interceptions.

“We didn’t want him to run all over the field on us, but when you drop as many guys as we were, you expect a few runs to be successful,” Shell said. “It was absolutely our game plan to make him run more than he’s used to because them he isn’t getting into a comfort zone like he did a bit in that second quarter.”

Burnt Hills led 14-0 right out of the gate before Cornwall orchestrated two second-quarter touchdown drives. Jeff Grygiel and Luke Szido each had a rushing touchdown to get the Dragons back in the game. White made some big-time throws and scrambles to get them in position, but it wasn’t enough.

“They’re a really good program and we didn’t execute, it really hurts,” White said. “It hurts more when you see the faces of our seniors. We wanted this badly.”
