Section 1 football rankings

RANK TEAM REC LW COMMENTS
1 North Rockland 9-2 1

Despite missing several starters, the reigning Class AA champs had a solid showing at the Carmel 7 on 7, especially on the defensive side of the ball.

2 New Rochelle 702 2

It’s never easy to get a gauge on New Ro in the summer. But there’s reason to believe they’ll be further along than usual at Champions Camp later this month. Lots of optimism around RB Jason Ceneus.

3 Arlington 6-3 3

It's hard choosing a No. 3. But the two-time Carmel Linemen Challenge champs head into the summer a confident group. This unit is big and experienced and will be the primary strength of this team. Finding a replacement for RB Parker Howard is vital.

4 Harrison 5-4 4

Around Harrison, there’s talk that this group has the makings of a championship team. There’s so much depth in the backfield and star lineman Charlie Credendino is healthy and primed for a big year before heading off to Fordham.

5 John Jay-Cross River 9-2 5

Two names to learn by the fall: Etnik Rraci and Vincent Foti. Rraci is a bruising 6-3, 245-pound junior lineman who’ll anchor the squad. Foti is a rugged sophomore running back who could have a breakout season.

6 Poughkeepsie 10-1 6

The Pioneers are relatively quiet in the offseason, unless you following the recruiting trail. Former players Robert Johnson (Sacred Heart) and Josh Oliver (Ithaca) have committed. Returning lineman Brandon Weir and D’Andre Smith have garnered heavy Division I interest.

7 Ketcham 3-6 3-6

How good can the Indians be this season? We know they have one of the region’s top QBs in Kevin Duke, who was a Top 5 player at the Carmel 7 on 7. Watch for a big year from Duke’s top target, J.J. Mulvey.

8 John Jay-East Fishkill 8-2 8

The power of numbers can’t be understated. Although the Patriots graduated so much talent, they had a ton of players on the field at the Carmel 7 on 7. Competition at almost every position will breed success.

9 Somers 6-3 9

Maybe the Tuskers aren’t getting the attention they deserve. This is a team that returns a few linemen and an exceptional two-way duo of Stefano Bicknese and Joe Lombardo.

10 Lourdes 6-2 10

The Warriors may have something special brewing here. This offensive line is so big and, as we learned at Carmel, exceptionally strong. If they can find a consistent go-to back, they’ll be heavy favorites to win in Class B.

RANK TEAM REC LW COMMENTS
1 Newburgh 10-2 1

The defending champs are certainly making waves on the recruiting scene this summer. DB Jalen Williams and RB Anthony Dubose are each on the radar for Syracuse.

2 Monroe-Woodbury 8-2 2

The Crusaders were a little inconsistent at the Camp of Champions scrimmages. But much had to do with new QB Kevin Carr getting hurt. Give this team a month and the Monroe machine will be fully functioning.

3 Cornwall 10-2 2

The reigning Class A champs are blessed with talent in the backfield and in the secondary on defense. They did graduate five all-state players. But there’s no reason to not consider them favorites in Class A.

4 Warwick 6-4 4

Graduating record setting quarterback John Garcia doesn’t necessarily mean the system is going to falter. Warwick is a dynamic offense again and WRs Jordan Totaro and Brad Garcia give them two big-play threats.

5 Kingston 5-4 5

Kingston is on a nice run of talent but graduated the core of last year’s playoff team, which knocked off state finalist Newburgh. Expect Kingston to reload.

6 Wallkill 8-2 6

Josh Villafane is poised to step up and become the star he’s shown flashes of being the last two seasons. And Wallkill has the line, led by Andrew Connors, to muscle up with any team in Section 9.

7 Marlboro 9-2 7

The defending Class B champs were a little short-handed at the Camp of Champions but certainly impressed. The Iron Dukes have some holes to fill. But the athleticism and depth on the line looks solid.

8 FDR-Hyde Park 4-5 8

Anybody at the Carmel Linemen’s Challenge took notice of FDR, which had a massive group in the showcase. They fared well, losing in the last event to Arlington to settle for second. The unit will keep FDR in every game.

9 Washingtonville 5-4 9

This is a team that every year gets overlooked and then competes with everyone on their schedule. Washingtonville does graduate a lot but they’ve proven they can handle turnover each year. A very solid program.

10 Monticello 5-4 10

When you have a guy like Shane Jackson running the show, you have to like Monticello’s chances of breaking through. The program has come a long way. Jackson is looking to put them over the top.
