John Jay-Cross River overcame a tough Rye squad in Saturday's narrow 7-5 victory.

Stevens Tech-bound senior attackman Matt Ferentini led the way for the Indians with a season-high four goals. Frazier Bostwick added two goals and Brandon Lew scored one goal. Tom Beck, Doug Brown and Brandon Lee had one assist apiece.

Overall, Ferentini leads John Jay-CR in scoring with 13 points on eight goals and five assists.

“Matt played really well," John Jay-CR coach Tim Schurr said. "I think this has got to be one of the best games he has played. Rye is a well-coached team and it was hard for us to do a lot on offense. We weren’t playing poorly; they just were playing well defensively. I think you have to give them a lot of credit.”

Junior goalie Christian Davey, who started his first game in place of regular starter Thomas Branca, played big for the Indians. Davey had 13 saves and anchored down the defense.

“We have two quality goalies and it’s great,” Schurr said. “Thomas needed to sit, but we have a lot of confidence in Christian. We knew he’d do well.”

Jack Hasselmann, Caly Hynson and Chris Santangelo each had a goal and an assist for the Garnets, who were without head coach Brian Dooley. Dooley’s wife gave birth on Saturday, so Brian’s brother and assistant coach Scott Dooley coached the team.

“The game started at 12:00 p.m. and Brian’s wife gave birth at 12:04 p.m.,” Schurr said. “Scott stepped in nicely but I can imagine that had a little bit of an effect on them as a team. They’re well coached, play well together and have a few very good players. I was impressed.”

John Jay-CR — which improved to 3-1 on the year — takes on Class B foe Brewster in its next game on April 10. Rye (2-2) hosts Pleasantville in its next game on April 12.
