The past week of practice was agonizing for Hackley coach Phil Treglia. In his debut as head coach last Saturday, his team squandered a big halftime lead and lost a heart-breaker on opening day.
“It was a rough week,” Treglia said. “Our goal this week was to finish what we started. We were preaching that all week.”
The message got through for the Hornets. They turned a sizeable halftime lead into a comfortable victory, beating Kingswood-Oxford, 47-20.
“Even though we were up 33-6 at halftime, we didn’t relax,” Treglia said. “We marched 70 yards on the first drive of the second half and scored. That was important.”
Luke Sweeney scored four touchdowns — one on a kickoff return, one on a reception and two rushing — in the victory.
A.J. Wolf, who’ll play linebacker at Duke University, ran for two touchdowns and recorded 13 tackles and a sack on defense. Mike D’Allesio added 10 tackles for Hackley (1-1).
“We watched the film this week and explained to the kids where they faltered,” said Treglia, who spent the past three seasons at Woodlands. “There are definitely still things we need to improve on. But we simplified things for everyone and we played faster and more confident. We all knew what is expected and we did what we had to do.”
