YORKTOWN HEIGHTS — After seeing its 51-game winning streak end in Saturday's 4-3 loss to Connecticut superpower Darien, Lakeland field hockey picked up the pieces and started new one one Monday.
And the Hornets did so in style, posting a convincing 9-0 win over archival Yorktown (4-2-1) at Charlie Murphy Field.
All-Americans Emma Bozek and Shannon Scavelli led the way for Lakeland, pumping in five and three goals, respectively. Scavelli also assisted on three others. Teammates Gab Celentano (1G, 1A) and Gianna Bensaia (2A) also contributed.
Lakeland only got better as the game wore on, outscoring Yorktown 8-0 in the second half.
"Well, Saturday was a really tough loss for us, as you can imagine," said Bozek, who will play for the University of North Carolina next year. "To come back today we knew the most important thing was to show everyone in Section 1 that Lakeland is here and we are going to be a tough team to face this year. We just really wanted to make a statement."
The Hornets, who improved to 7-1 on the year, have been making a statement all year, outscoring Section 1 teams by a combined total of 54-5 in 2011.
