It’s a Martin Luther King Day matinee in the CHSAA as Holy Cross hosts Iona Prep in a boys basketball game live on MSGVarsity.com Monday at 2:30 p.m.
The Knights, ranked No. 11 in New York City by MSG Varsity, are looking to bounce back from consecutive losses to city powerhouses Christ the King and Cardinal Hayes.
The Gaels, meanwhile, have dropped four straight games since a 56-49 win over Mount St. Michael in New Rochelle on Jan. 4.
Coached by Tommy Marchesini, Holy Cross (9-7) is led by a talented group of guards, including sophomore Jermaine Bishop, who had a game-high 27 points in a 70-65 win over St. Francis Prep Jan. 11.
Seniors Terrell Williams and Ryan Wilson as well as junior Joshua Wallace, have also been big for the Knights.
Iona Prep (7-9) also has a sophomore standout in Matt Ryan, a 6-foot-6 forward with seemingly unlimited range. When things are going well for the Gaels, as was the case against Mount, it’s a team effort. Brandon Williams, Isiah Ice and Tom Capuano have all stepped up at various times to help lead Iona Prep, in its first year in the CHSAA Class AA after winning the Class A title a year ago, to big wins.
Capuano, a sophomore guard, scored 15 of his game-high 19 points in the second half and had four assists and three steals in the 59-46 home win over Mount.
Both teams are patient offensively and have talented guards and both need a win to get back on track. Will Holy Cross hold serve at home or will the Gaels return to Westchester County with a much-needed victory? Find out Monday at 2:30 p.m. on MSGVarsity.com.
