HARTSDALE - Maria Regina — the four-time defending Westchester/Bronx CHSAA champs — flexed its muscles in Wednesday's home opener, posting a convincing 8-0 win over Sacred Heart.

Senior scoring sensation Meghan Marcotte led the way with three goals and an assist.

"I think it's very important to start off strong and finish strong," said Marcotte, who totaled a team-high 32 goals and 17 assists in 2010. "Hopefully, we make it all the way this year."

The Tigers (1-1) finished 16-1-3 last season, falling in the CHSAA Archdiocesan semifinals in penalty kicks to St. Joseph by the Sea.

Marcotte wasn't the only standout, as teammate Meghan Caspare was equally impressive. The upstart junior bagged back-to-back goals in the 26th and 27th minute to stretch the Tigers' first-half lead to 3-0. She also setup Marcotte's third and final goal, giving Maria Regina a 5-0 lead with 30:28 left in regulation.

Keri Helmrich (two goals), Asia Shkreli (one goal, one assist) and Taylor O'Grady (one assist) rounded of the scoring for the Tigers, who will host St. Barnabas in their next game on September 16.

While Sacred Heart (0-1) struggled to match the intensity of powerhouse Maria Regina, it was still a historic day for the Fighting Irish, who competed in their first girls soccer game in program history.
