Marlboro’s run to the Class B championship was ended on Saturday afternoon as the Iron Dukes lost to Section 2’s Glens Falls 28-17 in a game that was closer than the final score indicated.

Marlboro trailed Glens Falls 14-0 less than six minutes into the game but stormed back and trailed by only three points heading into the fourth quarter. However, Glens Falls’ Mike Lanoir threw a halfback pass to Joe McMahon with 9:23 remaining and then converted a third-and-9 late in the game to seal the win.

“My hat’s off to Glens Falls; they’re a great team and a great program,” said Marlboro coach Rich Ward. “Tonight, they were the better team. They made the big plays where we didn’t. They’re moving on and we’re going to do some reflection. I’m proud of my kids; we just came up short tonight.”

The explosive plays of Glens Falls were the difference in the game with quarterback Cam Girard and Lanoir grabbing the momentum when the Indians needed it most. Girard completed a flea-flicker for 64 yards on the Indians’ first offensive play of the game to set up a McMahon touchdown and then hit Lanoir for an 80-yard touchdown less than three minutes later to break the game open. Girard had an interception on the following series and Lanoir also had an 80-yard touchdown run later in the game.

“We set goals in the beginning of the year and we’ve accomplished almost all of them, so it’s really cool,” Lanoir said. “We’ve made big plays all year and it’s not just one or two guys; everyone contributes. But we knew that Marlboro was a tough team, maybe the toughest we’ve played all year, and they’re like us. They never quit and are a tough group of kids.”

Lanoir finished with eight rushes for 106 yards and a touchdown, threw a 21-yard touchdown, and had three receptions for 108 yards and a touchdown. Girard was 7-for-13 passing for 209 yards and a score while McMahon ran for 94 yards and a touchdown and had three receptions for 17 yards and another score. Jake Dailey had two receptions for 105 yards.

Despite the obvious big plays, Marlboro did a solid job of containing Glens Falls and keeping the game in reach. Matt Tamburri took home the Dukes' defensive MVP award for his play at linebacker and had one sack and multiple one-on-one tackles.

“I really think it was the trick plays that got to us,” Tamburri said. “We didn’t sit back enough and it was a step or two that separated a touchdown from a deflected pass. But we have a lot of fighters on this team. It’s been a long year and a great year. We’re lucky to have made it this far and, we’re happy that we made it this far.”

Austin Beck had 111 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries while Justin Votta ran for 59 yards on 14 carries. However, the Marlboro offensive MVP award went to senior kicker Adam Laubach.

Laubach, a former soccer player, made three field goals in the game, including a 50-yard bomb in the second quarter. His other two kicks came from 34 and 35 yards out.

“It’s great (to take home the MVP) but in the end, I would have much rather had a victory and no field goals,” Laubach said. “(This year has) been fantastic. It’s the best season I’ve ever been a part of. This is my first season playing football and I couldn’t have asked for anything more.”
