Pearl River stuns top-seeded Nyack

As the saying goes, it’s tough to beat a good team twice.

For top-seeded Nyack (12-5-1), it was even tougher to beat a good team three times. The Indians, who beat rival Pearl River twice during the regular season, fell to the Pirates, 16-15, in the Section 1 Class C quarterfinals on Saturday.

No. 9-seeded Pearl River will travel to No. 4-seeded Rye for a semifinal matchup on Monday afternoon.

The Pirates (10-7-1) trailed by five goals in the second half before storming back to take the lead with Kaity Creagh’s game-winning goal with 1:56 remaining in the game. She finished with four goals and three assists.

“We were down 12-7 and I called a timeout and during the timeout we talked about not wanting this to be the end of our season,” Pearl River coach Laurie Mayernik said. “I told them I wasn’t ready for it and I didn’t think my seniors were ready for it.”

Notre Dame-bound Kiera McMullan (2G, 2A), Allison Cook (5G, 1A), Creagh (4G, 3A), and defender Brianna Relahan powered the Pirates.

“Cook and Creagh did what they had to do today,” Mayernik said. “The whole team really did because they doubled McMullan a lot, and everyone stepped up.”

Pearl River's semifinal matchup against the Garnets will be its third straight road playoff game.

“We just have to hustle, work hard, and keep playing for each other,” Mayernik said. “We’ll continue to be successful.”
