PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. — Pleasantville scored three goals in all four quarters en route to a 12-3 win over rival Briarcliff (3-8) in the marquee game of Saturday's inaugural "Saw Mill Slugfest" lax festival at Pleasantville High School.

Sophomore attackman Brendan Halloran was seemingly unstoppable, registering a game-high four goals and three assists to earn MVP honors.

“We knew we had to come out as strong as we could to get the best possible looks on offense and finish the shots," Halloran said.

The Panthers (3-7) did just that, saturating the offensive zone to the tune of 37 shots. In addition to Halloran, Kyle O’Loughlin scored three times and assisted on another. Owen Reda and Charlie Montgomery (one assist) notched two goals a piece. Greg Drillock had a four-point game with one goal and three assists.

The Bears, who ran a zone defense in hopes of slowing down the game, were unable to keep up. According to Halloran, Pleasantville busted Briarcliff's zone with constant ball movement and possession.

Looking at its overall performance against the Bears, one would not expect Pleasantville to have a losing record. But the Panthers have suffered a slew of one-goal losses.

"We've had five one-goal losses and they've been tough," O’Loughlin said. "But that's the thing about this team — we never give up and just stick together.”

On top of beating its archival, Pleasantville also clinched a Section 1 Class C playoff berth. It marked the Panthers' seventh straight win over Briarcliff.

"It's big," O’Loughlin said. "This exact win helped us get into the playoffs. It was a big game and we came out tough and got the W.”

If the Panthers continue to come out tough down the stretch, they could be hoisting a different piece of hardware come June.

For Briarcliff, Matt Ballini, Ben Adler and Ricky Grassey (one assist) had one goal apiece. Goalie Russell Cocozza made 12 stops.
