Top 10 Westchester/Hudson Valley boys lacrosse teams
1) Yorktown — The Huskers enter the season as Section 1's best bet for a state title. If you are a fan of high-scoring lacrosse — and, really, who isn't? — make sure to check out a Yorktown game this year.
2) John Jay-CR — A healthy Tommy Beck will be a major boon for Indians, who also return one of the section's best goalies in Fairfield-bound Thomas Branca. John Jay-CR opens at rival Yorktown on Saturday. The Huskers have won four of the past five matchups.
3) Lakeland/Panas — Coach Jim Lindsay works magic year in and year out, so expect the Rebels to be back in the Section 1 Class A title game. Also, keep an eye out for sophomore attackman Brian Prunty, who is poised for a breakout season.
4) Mahopac — The defending Section 1 Class A champ lost its entire starting attack to graduation, but there are athletes all over the field. Look for Stony Brook-bound midfielder Anthony Berardis — one of the section's most dynamic players — to take on an even bigger role.
5) Somers — The Cousin brothers, Kevin (attackman) and Chris (goalie), join a long line of sibling standouts at Somers. The duo will play a huge role for the Tuskers in 2012.
6) Suffern — Albany-bound senior midfielder Kevin McNally should be back from a broken jaw in time for Suffern's first big test against John Jay-CR on April 5. The Mounties also return senior attackman Peter Sharp, a classic finisher with the potential to crack the 50-goal mark.
7) Iona Prep — Bucknell-bound attackman Shane Fee returns to lead the Gaels, who open up the season against Section 1 power Somers on March 29. Iona Prep stunned the Tuskers, 7-6, in last year's matchup.
8) Rye — Senior attackman Greg Stern returns for a Rye squad that was hit hard by graduation. The Garnets will square off against Iona Prep in their season opener on April 2.
9) Brewtser — Brewster, which won five of its last six games to close out the 2011 season, returns a ton of key pieces and is poised for a bounce back year.
10a) Hen Hud — Matt Ledwin (Hopkins) and Eddie Gilman (UNC) have the college commitment cache, but keep an eye on playmaking defenseman Joe Fraietta. The Sailors, who dropped down to Class C, have the talent to win a sectional title.
10b) Bronxville — Defending Section 1 Class C champs will be hard-pressed to replace the All-American midfield duo of Jack Near (Notre Dame) and Charlie McCormick (Georgetown). Look for Duke-bound attackman Jack Grass to fill the void.
