Ramondellis lead New Ro past ETB

As the final games of the season unfold across Section 1, just one surname is atop the lists for most goals, assists and total points – Ramondelli. The interesting thing is - there are two of them.
New Rochelle’s senior brothers Chris and Joey Ramondelli have firmly made their respective marks across the section this season.
Chris, a forward, leads the section with 36 goals and 63 total points after a two goal, one assist performance in Tuesday’s 7-2 victory over ETB. Joey, a forward/defenseman came into Tuesday night with 31 assists before notching three more for a league-leading regular season total of 34.
To say the Ramondellis have been the spark that ignited the Hugenots to a 12-6-2 record and a likely top-five seed in the coming postseason may be the understatement of the year in Section 1 – but you’ll never hear them say it.
“It’s nice for our team because it shows our offensive ability,” Joey Ramondelli said. “It’s obviously not just the two of us; it’s the rest of the team. We keep our composure and we get it done.”
The Huguenots needed that composure on Tuesday night as ETB held a 2-0 lead heading into the third period. ETB struck twice in the final five minutes of the second period behind Chris Hagen’s breakaway goal and Matt Power’s rebound.
Despite the late-game deficit, New Rochelle head coach Jim Tozzo calmly put his faith in his team’s depth and explosiveness.
“We had a lot of opportunities in the first two periods and their goalie played very well,” Tozzo said. “By the third period we just wore them down. Our team speed is as good as anybody’s in the league so we just kept the pressure on and once the floodgate opened that was it.”
Tozzo’s faith was rewarded right away in the third as the deeper Huguenot squad erupted for five goals in the first five minutes. Senior Mark Umbro opened the scoring just a minute into the period. More goals followed quickly as Chris Ramondelli notched his two scores, Brett Barry added two of his own and John Valente and Shmuley Reitman added one each.
“We were down 2-0 to (ETB) the last time we played them and we won 5-2 so we knew we could score because we’ve done it before,” said Chris Ramondelli. “Once we start scoring it just seems there is no stopping us and we had the scoring touch in the third period.”
ETB (8-12) will likely enter the playoffs as a low seed and will be seeking upset in the early rounds.
“We’ll probably be facing a team like Rye Town/Harrison or White Plains in the first round so it will be a tough challenge,” ETB coach David O’Neal said. “We kept it together as long as we could today and it’s been an up and down year for us. We’re a very young team and I would love to go into the first round and give a good team the best game we can.”
GAME NOTES: ETB took a 2-0 lead with under a minute to go in the second period and were thinking upset before New Rochelle’s offense found their groove in the third. The Huguenots notched five goals in the first five minutes of the final period on their way to seven unanswered goals. Five different Huguenots scored as New Rochelle showcased the speed and depth that has them hoping to make a deep run in the postseason.
KEYS TO THE GAME
1. Depth Charging: Down 2-0 entering the third, the Huguenots took advantage of the scope of their bench and their conditioning to tally seven straight goals. As the overworked ETB lines tired, New Rochelle started winning loose pucks and working odd-man rushes to secure the win.
2. Ramondelli Rush: New Rochelle senior Chris Ramondelli came into the game as Section 1’s leading scorer while his brother Joey led the section in assists. Chris scored twice to bring his total to 36 goals on the season while Joey passed his way to three assists for a season total of 34.
3. Feliu Fortress: New Rochelle goalkeeper Greg Feliu gave up two goals in a span of four minutes late in the second period. One was a clear breakaway while the other came on a fortunate ETB bounce for a rebound score. In the other 41 minutes of the game Feliu was perfect as he saved 31 of 33 total shots to allow his teammates time to get back in the game.
