Ranagan leads Yorktown past TZ

YORKTOWN, N.Y. — In a Section 1 Class B opening round game, No. 7-seeded Yorktown cruised to a 10-3 win over No. 10-seeded Tappan Zee. The Huskers (7-9-1) jumped out to a 4-0 lead at the half and never looked back.

“Our defense was really solid,” Yorktown coach Ellen Mager said. “When we did make mistakes, we were able to fight through them.”

Senior Stefanie Ranagan paced Yorktown with a game-high five goals, including the 100th of her career. Ranagan leads the team with 50 goals overall and has 10 in her last two games.

“She’s had a nice career and I’m happy for her,” Mager said.

Emily Concialdi rounded out the offensive production for the Huskers with four goals. Goalie Katie Frederick had 10 saves.

For Tappan Zee (7-9), Sarah Wenke (1A) Julia Chesterman and Bianca Waffenschmidt notched one goal apiece. Goalie Ashley Mezzacappa had six saves.

Next up, Yorktown will travel to No. 2-seeded John Jay-Cross River for a quarterfinal matchup on Saturday. The Huskers split with the Indians during the regular season, winning the first game 17-16 and dropping the second 14-11.
