CHAPPAQUA, N.Y. — In Thursday night’s matchup between Rye and Horace Greeley, Garnets coach Brian Dooley picked up on a trend.

Every time Horace Greeley took the lead, the Garnets would quickly answer and retie it.

“My brother (assistant coach Scott Dooley) pointed it out to me,” Brian Dooley said. “They’d go up a goal and we’d turn it around real quick and tie it up. It kept going back and forth in that one-goal battle. It was a weird little thing and you try not to put too much on it, but we knew we’d need to get two in a row at some point if we wanted to win.”

Rye didn’t just get two in a row — they got four.

The Garnets edged the Quakers, 9-6, on Thursday afternoon behind a quick four-goal scoring barrage that started late in the third quarter and ended early in the fourth. Overall, Rye outscored Greeley 6-3 in the second half after two the teams played an even 3-3 game through two quarters.

“We knew we needed to keep our composure,” said Richmond-bound senior attackman Greg Stern. “We have a tough team with a lot of young talent, so I knew we could pull it together.”

Stern led the way for the Garnets with two goals and two assists and seemed to get better as the game progressed. He assisted on two of the four back-breaking goals and scored a pair of fourth-quarter goals to seal it.

Chris Santangelo also played well for the Garnets, scoring two goals and dishing out an assist while Andrew Davis and Jack Hasselman each added two goals. Cal Hynson rounded out the Rye scoring with a goal and an assist. Goalie Peter White had nine saves.

“We just wanted to stay positive and stay on them,” Santangelo said. “We just wanted to keep attacking; we knew we’d score eventually.”

While Rye came away with the victory, Horace Greeley gave the Garnets real trouble at times. Swarthmore-bound senior attackman Alex Scott continually attacked the net and notched two goals and two assists. Cory Ekstrom and Ethan Frieder each had two goals.

Senior goalkeeper Doug Gusick singlehandedly kept the Quakers in the game at times, notching 11 saves.

“You always know it’s going to be a battle when Rye comes in to play," Greeley coach Vin DeGregorio said. "Hats off to them. Dougie (Gusick) was real solid today. He’s a senior leader and a veteran. We expect that from him and we’re proud of the way he played.

"It's a marathon, not a sprint, so we’ll get back to work and bounce back.”

The Garnets won’t have much time to celebrate the win though as they face John Jay-Cross River on Saturday in Rye’s fifth game in seven days. The Garnets know the game will be challenging, but they still like their odds.

“We’ll take it just like any other game,” Santangelo said. “We know how good they can be, but we also know how good we can be. We’re just going to come out and give it our best.”
