1 | Yorktown | 12-3 | 1 |
Huskers saw their seven-game winning streak come to an end on Saturday against LI power St. Anthony's. They will look to rebound against Wilton (CT) — which has won three straight in the annual Jim Turnbull Cup — this afternoon. |
2 | John Jay-CR | 10-6 | 2 |
The 16-13 loss to Iona Prep was a head-scratcher. The Indians hadn't relinquished that many goals in 95 games, dating back to a 16-12 loss to St. Anthony's in 2008. Still, I wouldn't bet on a Tim Schurr-led defense giving up that many goals in the postseason. |
3 | Lakeland/Panas | 10-6 | 3 |
L/P rebounded from a 6-5 upset loss to Suffern on Thursday with a quality 7-5 win over Somers on Saturday. If defense wins championships, the Rebels have to like their chances heading into the Class A playoffs. |
4 | Bronxville | 14-1 | 5 |
With wins over Mahopac and now Somers, Bronxville has officially joined Section 1's elite. Keep an eye on junior middie Brewster Warble, who had seven goals against Somers to give him 50 on the year. Think of Warble as Charlie McCormick Part II — a soccer/lacrosse player with wheels to spare. |
5 | Somers | 9-7 | 4 |
Tuskers ended the regular season on a down note, dropping back-to-back games to L/P and Bronxville. Giving up 18 goals to the Broncos was alarming. Somers must tighten up its defense with the Class B playoffs looming. |
6 | Iona Prep | 10-6 | 8 |
Explosive offensive has been the name of the game for Iona Prep, which is 7-1 over its last eight while averaging 13 goals a game. Nazareth-bound attackman Luke Wooters has led the charge, bagging a combined 12 goals in wins over John Jay-CR, Monsignor Farrell and Christian Bros. |
7 | Mahopac | 9-6 | 6 |
Saturday's 10-7 loss to Northport (LI) was Mahopac's sixth in its past seven games. Still, I expect this team back in the Class A finals against Lakeland/Panas. Look for a healthy Anthony Berardis to lead the playoff charge. |
8 | Brewster | 10-6 | 7 |
Bears won seven of their final eight games to close out the regular season. They will be a favorite to make the final four in the upcoming Class B playoffs. |
9 | Arlington | 9-6 | 10 |
Tucked away from the limelight up in Dutchess County, coach Don Connolly's program is a sleeping giant. The Admirals, who are playing their best lax at the most opportune time, shocked the section with a 9-2 win over Suffern on Saturday. Arlington has won eight of its past nine and is primed to pull off a huge upset in the Class A playoffs. |
10 | Suffern | 11-4 | 9 |
Suffern got the best of archnemesis Lakeland/Panas with a narrow 6-5 win on Thursday. On the downside, they followed it up with a 9-2 loss to Arlington on Saturday. The Mounties certainly have the talent to make a deep run in the Class A playoffs, but which team will show up? |
