Tappan Zee's dream run ends in state final
GLENS FALLS, N.Y. — Tappan Zee’s perfect season and quest for a state championship ended on Sunday. The Dutchmen lost to Long Island powerhouse Harborfields 67-58 in the Class A title game at the Glens Falls Civic Center.
Lucas Woodhouse had 15 points and 10 assists to earn MVP honors for Harborfields, which outscored Tappan Zee 23-12 in the fourth quarter.
“If it was just basketball, it would be fine. But this is so much more than basketball,” Tappan Zee coach George Gaine said. “You can tell by the way we played. This is just such a close-knit group of kids. It’s tough.”
Tappan Zee ended the season 25-1. This was the school’s first ever trip to the state final four.
Pat Peterson had an incredible weekend. After scoring 28 of his 31 points in the second half of Saturday’s stunning win over Jamesville-DeWitt, he had 20 points and five rebounds on Sunday.
Joe Letizia had had 14 points and five assists and Billy O’Shea added 10 points and 10 rebounds.
The game featured 15 lead changes and was tied 48-48 with five minutes remaining. Tappan Zee was down 54-53 with 2:21 left after a Peterson 3-pointer. He had four 3’s in the game.
Woodhouse, who sat part of the game with foul trouble, took the game over from there. Harborfields led 60-58 when Letizia sank three free throws with 1:20 to play. But the Tornadoes scored the final seven points to win.
“It’s hard because I’ve been playing with these kids for a while,” Letizia said. “I’m looking back at all the memories, not even just the loss. It’s hard to bare.”
Harborfields shot 74-percent from the field and hit 8 of 15 from 3-point range (53-percent). The Tornadoes shot 14 of 17 from the field in the first half and led 36-35.
“They hit some unbelievable shots,” Gaine said. “They shot a crazy percentage from the field. If you left them open for a shot they were going to hit it.”
John Patron and Justin Ringen each had 20 points in the victory.
