New Rochelle's Khalil Edney became an instant celebrity after sinking a miraculous 55-foot buzzer-beating shot to defeat Mt. Vernon in the Section 1 Class AA championship back in March.
The highlight — simply known as 'The Shot' — was replayed for days on ESPN's SportsCenter and became a national story.
Well, the story just got a little better.
Edney's shot has been nominated for "Best Play" at the 2013 ESPYS, an annual awards show hosted by ESPN. A total of 16 plays were selected. Bracket-style voting on ESPN's web site will determine which plays advance to the finals.
"I was really surprised I was in it," Edney said. "I'm going to be voting all night."
An interesting twist is that Edney is nominated in the same category as another New Rochelle star: Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice. Rice's 4th-and-29 conversion in Week 13 against the San Diego Chargers was given a 3 seed in the voting brackets. Edney's play was given a 2 seed, behind only South Carolina defensive end Jadeveon Clowney's helmet-jarring hit and fumble recovery in the Outback Bowl against Michigan.
The ESPYS are slated to take place on July 17 at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles. Edney's planning to make the trip with New Rochelle basketball coach Rasaun Young.
