The Mamaroneck field hockey team is one step closer to its first New York State championship since 2004 after a 3-0 win over Section 3’s Liverpool in the Class A state semifinals on Saturday at Cicero-North Syracuse High School.

With 19:55 left in the first half, Hannah Fitzgerald got the Tigers on the board on an assist from Jessica Gardiner. Gardiner then widened the lead to 2-0, which was the score at halftime. She was assisted by Kayla Robinson.

“Our motto was, ‘Get to the ball and do special things,’” Mamaroneck coach John Savage said. “They really did that today.”

Alicia Meglio added an insurance goal with 22:52 left to play off an assist by Molly Cohen.

The Tigers have consistently received contributions from a variety of players and the win over Liverpool was no different.

“That’s where our strength comes from,” Savage said. “Gardiner is our leading scorer with 23 goals, but then you have Meglio with 15 goals. Jessica Corbin has 14. Different people step up. It’s kind of hard to really isolate us. We go into games saying, ‘They’ve got to beat our whole team, not just one or two people.’”

Liverpool had 10 corners to Mamaroneck’s nine, but the Tigers’ defense stepped up for the shutout. Nina Kumar made seven saves for Mamaroneck (20-1).

“She really played a great game for us,” Savage said of Kumar. “The defense played well. It was an even game. We took advantage of the opportunities we had. That was the difference in the game today.”

The Tigers will take on Section 11’s Sachem East in the Class A state championship game tomorrow at 10 a.m. at Cicero-North Syracuse High School.
