White Plains tops Wappingers in Class A opener
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. — In a Section 1 Class A opening round game, White Plains (6-10-1) jumped out to an early lead and fought off a comeback to defeat visiting Wappingers (5-11), 12-8, on Thursday afternoon.
White Plains travels to face top-seeded Lakeland/Panas in the quarterfinals on Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m.
The Tigers led 5-0 early on but the Warriors fought back and pulled it to 6-4 with two minutes left to play in the half. However, the Tigers scored the next four goals to seal the victory.
“I think we got a little overconfident; all of a sudden we lost the momentum and they had it,” White Plains coach Mike Leone said. “But overall I think we kept our composure.”
Leone’s daughter, Kate, was instrumental in helping White Plains to the win. Leone, a sophomore, scored five goals and dominated the first half to help the Tigers jump out to an early advantage.
“It feels great to win and now we get to keep playing,” Kate Leone said. “We always tend to start off playing really hard and as the game goes on we slow down and make mistakes. But in the second half we really picked it up and finished off right.”
White Plains’ Hannah Ward, Shannon Lynch and Lauren Sharpe each added two goals with Ware also notching an assist. Tess D’Arcy also scored a goal and Olivia Bellantoni had two assists.
Wappingers’ Olivia Oppenheim played great for the Warriors, scoring three of her five goals in the first half. Teammates Alyssa Zeoli, Allie Elmes and Abigail Evans each scored a goal and Jenna Lasaponara had an assist.
“We dug ourselves an early hole and the rest of the game was really pretty much even,” Wappingers coach Anthony Whitehouse said. “We had a lot of positives this season and we had a few wins, but we really just tried to learn and grow as a team and as individuals this season. We got better, but we still have a long way to go.”
